  • TC & SE - Text Completion & Sentence Equivalence
1. Building a Strong Vocabulary
  • Focus on High-Frequency Words: To effectively handle GRE TC and SE questions, a solid understanding of high-frequency words is essential. The 5000 "hot words" that you mentioned should be curated from diverse sources, ensuring they cover a range of contexts and shades of meaning.
  • Learning from Context: Encourage students to learn how words are used in different contexts. This helps them grasp the nuances of meaning and choose the correct word based on the sentence structure and surrounding words.
2. Understanding Multiple Meanings of Words
  • Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Meanings: GRE often tests words with multiple meanings. For example, the word "bark" can mean the outer covering of a tree or the sound a dog makes. In Text Completion questions, understanding the different layers of a word's meaning allows students to select the right one for the context.
  • Practice with Sentences: To build this skill, students should practice sentence completion exercises that emphasize different meanings of the same word. Encourage students to focus on both the dictionary definition and the contextual meaning.
3. Techniques for Text Completion (TC) and Sentence Equivalence (SE) Questions
  • Use of Context Clues: Teach students to rely on context clues like tone, contrast, and causality to infer meanings of unfamiliar words. These can guide them toward the correct answer even when they don’t know a word directly.
  • Process of Elimination: In both TC and SE questions, the process of elimination is a useful tool in GRE Verbal Section. By ruling out choices that don’t fit with the overall meaning or tone of the sentence, students can increase their chances of selecting the correct answer.
  • Parallel Structure in SE: For Sentence Equivalence questions, encourage students to look for pairs of words that fit grammatically and semantically. Both words should fit into the sentence in a way that maintains parallel structure, ensuring they make sense together.
4. Timed Exercises and Exposure to High-Difficulty Questions
  • Increase Challenge Level: Regular practice with high-difficulty questions from various sources like the GRE Official Guides (ETS), as well as other GRE prep materials, will help students become more familiar with tougher vocabulary and sentence structures.
  • Timed Practice: Timed exercises are key to building speed and confidence. By practicing with time limits, students learn to make quicker decisions, which is vital for managing the time pressure during the actual test.
5. Advanced Techniques for Tackling Difficult Sentences
  • Pre-emptively Analyze Sentence Structure: Before jumping into word choices, have students identify the subject, verb, and key ideas in the sentence. This helps them understand the meaning the sentence is trying to convey, which will guide their word choice in TC and SE questions posed in GRE Verbal Section.
  • Substitute and Test: When in doubt about a word choice, students can mentally substitute it back into the sentence. This helps them test whether the word logically and grammatically fits, ensuring they don’t miss subtle nuances.

By combining a broad vocabulary base with strong test-taking strategies, students can significantly improve their performance on TC and SE questions. Regular practice, along with understanding word meanings in varying contexts, will enhance their ability to handle these tricky GRE questions efficiently.

  • Analytical Writing - Essay

The GRE Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section is a critical part of your GRE preparation. In the new format, students only have to write one essay: The Analysis of an Issue. Crafting a high-scoring essay requires a clear understanding of the structure and expectations of this section. Here’s a detailed guide on how to approach it and maximize your score:

High-Scoring Template for Analysis of an Issue Essay:

1. Introduction Paragraph:
  • Introduce the Topic: Begin by paraphrasing the given statement and providing context. This shows that you understand the issue at hand.
  • State Your Position: Clearly state your stance on the issue, whether you agree or disagree with the statement. If needed, explain any nuances in your position (e.g., partially agree).
  • Outline Your Approach: Briefly preview the reasons that support your position, so the reader knows what to expect in the essay.
2. Body Paragraphs (Typically 3 paragraphs):
  • Topic Sentence: Start each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence, outlining the main idea of that paragraph.
  • Explanation and Examples: After stating your point, explain it in more detail and provide concrete examples to back it up. Real-world examples, whether historical, societal, or personal, are always more persuasive than abstract reasoning.
  • Linking Words: Use transition words to connect ideas within and across paragraphs. This helps with the flow of the essay and makes it easier to follow.
3. Counterargument Paragraph (Optional but Helpful):
  • Acknowledge potential opposing viewpoints to show your critical thinking. Then, refute them logically and explain why your perspective is more convincing.
  • This section demonstrates that you are able to consider multiple perspectives and defend your position effectively.
4. Conclusion Paragraph:
  • Summarize Your Main Points: Reiterate your position and briefly summarize the key points that support your argument.
  • Final Thought: End with a strong closing statement that reinforces your view or suggests broader implications. This leaves a lasting impression.

Tips for High Scoring The GRE Essay:

  • Clarity and Precision: Be clear in your writing. Avoid overly complex or convoluted sentences.
  • Use of Transition Words: These are essential for coherence. Words like “first,” “in addition,” “furthermore,” “for example,” and “however” help organize your ideas and connect them smoothly.
  • Quality of Reasoning and Examples: The more specific and detailed your examples, the stronger your argument will be. Use examples from a variety of sources, including your own knowledge, books, or current events.
  • Addressing Counterarguments: Even if not required, addressing a counterargument can show a more comprehensive understanding of the issue and increase the depth of your essay.
  • Practice Timed Essays: As the GRE is a timed test, practicing under test conditions will help you manage your time effectively and improve your performance.

Mock Tests and Evaluation:

A crucial part of preparing for the Analytical Writing Section is practicing with full-length GRE mock tests under actual exam conditions. These timed exercises simulate the stress of the GRE and help you practice organizing your thoughts quickly. After each mock test, expert evaluation of your essays will provide valuable feedback on areas to improve, such as:

  • Organization and clarity
  • Argument strength and coherence
  • Grammar and syntax
  • The quality of examples and reasoning

After multiple practice tests, students can make significant improvements in their writing skills, which is why many of our students score up to 5.5/6 in the AWA section of the GRE.

By following this approach, you will be well-equipped to achieve a high score on the GRE and, ultimately, a strong overall score (like 335/340) in the exam. The key is consistent practice, expert feedback, and mastering essay structure.

  • AWA - Analysis of an Issue

Also start reading some good newspaper editorials, magazines, novels, etc. to improve your reading power and vocabulary. Learn the different meanings of unfamiliar words you come across. Doing so will help you tackle the Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence questions effectively. Lastly, join a good GRE Prep Course. Do not join a big batch with 20 - 30 students for your GRE Prep. It helps you if the batch size is small i. e. 4 to 6 students. And meet the mentors before joining to check your comfort level. Good luck!

For the “Analyze an Issue” task, the candidates are given to read an opinion on a topic of general interest and type a response to it. The time allotted for the task is 30 minutes. The GRE test takers are expected to…

  • Articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
  • Support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
  • Sustain a well - focused, coherent discussion
  • Control the elements of standard written English
GRE Verbal Reasoning Syllabus

The candidates are given two sections of Verbal Reasoning. They are required to answer a total of 27 questions in 41 minutes. The types of question are as follow:

  • 7 Text Completion Questions
  • 6 Sentence Equivalence Questions
  • 14 Reading Comprehension Questions

Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence: Text Completion (TC) and Sentence Equivalence (SE) questions in GRE are designed to test the candidates’ understanding of complex words. They need to understand the whole context in which they are using the words. Thus, proper analysis of the given sentences becomes crucial. Text Completion questions are of three types, i.e. Single Blank Questions, Double Blank Questions and Triple Blank Questions. It is important to note that to get one mark in GRE, the candidate needs to answer all the parts of a question correctly. The Sentence Equivalence (SE) questions require candidates to fill in a single blank with two choices that create two coherent sentences that are logically similar in meaning. Hence, the test takers need to build very strong vocabulary to get a decent score in GRE Verbal Reasoning Section.

Reading Comprehension (RC): There will be 5 - 7 RC passages in The New GRE. These passages may from Natural Science, Humanities, Social Science, Business, etc. There will be approx. 14 multiple choice questions in The New GRE RC. The candidate has to select one or more options from the given choices. The types of question include:

  • The Primary Purpose or Theme of the Passage
  • Inference Based Questions
  • Specific Details Questions
  • Strengthen The Argument
  • Weaken The Argument
  • Title/ Tone/ Style
  • Reference to Context Questions
GRE Quantitative Reasoning Syllabus
  • 10 Quantitative Comparison Questions
  • 13 Problem Solving Questions
  • 4 Numeric Entry Questions
  • Total 27 Questions

You will be given the questions from almost 20 chapters studied in grades 9th and 10th. The difficulty levels of the questions may be higher, but the fundamental concepts are the same as of the high school mathematics. Also, no calculator is allowed in GRE Quantitative Reasoning Section.

Quantitative Comparison

You may get 4-6 Quantitative Comparison Questions in each of the GRE Quantitative Reasoning Section. Quantitative Comparison (QC) questions ask you to compare two quantities, i.e. Quantity A and Quantity B in the given conditions. You will be required to establish a relation between Quantity A and Quantity B. You will click on option…

  • A, if Quantity A is Greater
  • B, if Quantity B is Greater
  • C, if both the quantities are equal
  • D, if there is no enough information
Problem Solving

The most common Problem Solving (PS) questions are standard multiple-choice questions, with three or more choices and one or more correct answer/s. These include questions that ask you to select one or more answers from a list of choices ‘Mark all-that-apply’ and questions that ask you to enter your answer in a box-Numeric Entry.

There are also a few questions associated with one or more line graphs, Bar Graphs, Pie Charts, Tables, etc. These Data Interpretation (DI) questions are similar to other Problem Solving Questions, but it’s important to note that extracting the information correctly from the graphs is the key to answering the questions correctly.

GRE Eligibility Criteria

There are no specific GRE eligibility criteria as prescribed by ETS. Anyone with a valid passport can register for GRE, irrespective of age and qualifications. However, most of the candidates take GRE while they are pursuing their Bachelor’s Degree. And it is also advisable that a student should take GRE while he is in the second or the third year of his Bachelor’s Course.

GRE Eligibility: Age Limit

No age limit is prescribed by ETS for candidates appearing for GRE. However, only the candidates who want to get admission in Post Graduate Programs in Management, Finance, Engineering, Law, Humanities, etc. take GRE. The students who want to do PhD also are required to take GRE.

GRE Eligibility: Qualification

ETS has not announced any official statement regarding the qualification required to appear for GRE. However, candidates are expected to have or pursuing a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

Difference between GRE at Home and GRE at a test centre

Candidates should understand that the GRE test at home has not replaced the GRE at the test centre. The GRE at home has been introduced for the convenience of students who are looking to appear for the GRE from the safety and convenience of their homes. The GRE exam fee for both the GRE test at Home and GRE at the test centre is the same. The GRE Exam Fee is US $220 for Indian students. The basic difference is that while the GRE at Home is held online at your home, which is proctored and supervised by ETS, the GRE at the test centre is conducted at an ETS designated test centre.

Further, while the GRE test centre has a specific test schedule, the GRE at home can be taken as per the convenience of the student. However, candidates will have to make sure that they have the required system hardware and software to run the GRE smoothly and without any interruption. This, however, would not be a matter of concern for students taking the exam at a GRE test centre managed by ETS. And ETS make all such arrangements.

Nevertheless, a few students have been caught indulging in malpractices while taking the proctored GRE at home. Therefore, many colleges want the students to take GRE at an ETS designated test center. It has more credibility. Hence, after the COVID 19 pandemic, most of the students are take GRE at a test center.

GRE Exam Dates

Like any other international standardized exams, there are multiple GRE exam dates every year in India and across the world. The candidates can opt for any GRE date according to their convenience and availability. A candidate needs to register for GRE latest before two working days before the exam.

GRE Test Centres

There are multiple ETS designated GRE test centers around the world. In India, GRE is conducted at over 20 cities having various GRE test centres. These centers are located in Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Gandhinagar, Gurgaon, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nashik, New Delhi, Nizamabad, Patna, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, Vadodara and Vijayawada. At all the above - mentioned test centers, only computer - based GRE is available. Paper - based GRE is not available in India. In fact, no one wants to take paper - based GRE. All the students want to take it on computer.

When The GRE Official Scores Are Available

On completion of your GRE, you will get your Quants and Verbal Scores. Thus, you will know immediately that how much you scored out of 340. However, your official GRE General Test Scores Report will be available in your ETS account 8 - 10 days after your exam. You'll receive an email from ETS when they are available. ETS will also send an official Institution Score Report to the score recipients you designated on the test day.

How to Send The GRE Score Report

ETS allows you to send your scores to up to four colleges of your choice without any additional fee. If you are taking the computer-delivered GRE exam, then you will be asked to select the score receivers at the test centre. After you complete the GRE test and view the unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores, you will be asked to choose the score recipients you wish to share your GRE exam scores with. If a college of your choice is not listed, ask the administrator at the test centre for a list of unlisted institutions. After the test, you can order Additional Score Reports for US $ 27 per college.

How The Computer-adaptation Works in GRE

The GRE is a computer-adaptive test, or CAT for short. Every test taker will see at least two Quants. Sections and two Verbal Sections. The difficulty level of the second section (easy, medium or hard) in each subject is determined by your performance in the first section. If you get lots of questions right in the first section, you will get a harder second section, which results into higher scores. If you get fewer questions right in the first section, you will get an easier second section and your scores will remain lower. The computer-delivered GRE is the standard format for test takers. The paper-based GRE is far rarer and only offered up to three times a year.
